There aren't many ways to secure an already existing connection. All you can really do is have safe practices and monitor the network for suspicious activity. If you have the option you can reset the router/gateway completely and reconfigure it from scratch. Search online for the owner's manual and there should be step by step instructions on how to do it.

open your web browser up to the gateway address of your network this will be your router IP also.
Use your admin username and password and log in.
look for a tag that says "wireless setup or wireless security"
then you can turn the security on by selecting WEP and entering a passphrase, then copy down the wep key and enter it in your laptops wireless connection setup.

Go into your router configuration settings on one of the laptops.
To do this, go into your internet browser and type in 192.168.0.1. A dialog box should pop up asking for a username/password. This should be the default that came with the router unless you changed it. Somewhere in your router configuration settings, you can set up a password. This may be described as "encryption" or "password protect" or "make this secure" or something along those lines. If 192.168.0.1 doesnt work, try one of these:

192.168.1.1
192.168.5.1
192.168.1.0

Check with your router manual.

Call your router company. They usually have tech support 24/7 for their customers. Mine is Linksys, have had it for 4 years and they are still helping when I add another computer.
