Generally speaking, when bands go mainstream they start to sell out. So basically, when they are less popular, they make music that matters to them, and then when they start to get fame, they start conforming to what's "in" in order to sell more, therefor losing their sound, their values, and their fans.

I, for example, hate it when people claim to love Led Zeppelin and yet theyve only heard three or four of their hits. i dunno. it happens alot to punk bands. i think cause usually the bands start going for a crappy, more radio-friendly sound when they do so.it doesn't bother me, as long as the bands don't START in the mainstream. there are only a few bands that did that that i have any respect for.
