I want to get my sister who is 11 to lose a little weight. She eats unhealthy and not very active. I can't stand watching her getting made fun of ALL the time and she getting upset about it. My parents don't like putting her on a diet because of their own reasons but how can she lose some weight? Also, don't ask about my parents, it's a very personal reason that you wouldn't understand.

Don't tell her that she is too heavy...believe it or not you will be unpleasantly surprised to see how disgustingly thin a self-conscious 11 year old can get.

Try to get her involved in some activities! Invite her to ride bikes or go roller skating with you in the park. If you have a basketball goal, challenge her and if you have a pool, race her. Try any actvities you can think of an observe closely what she enjoys the most and gets the most out of. If you find out she enjoys running, for example, encourage her to join the track team. If she is not interested in joining any teams, try getting her involved in ballet or any dance incase sports are not her thing. If she just doesnt want to join a team, continue to excercise in the way SHE prefers. Your sister will quickly tire of physical activity if she does not enjoy it.

Encourage your parents to buy less junk food and more fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat these as an after school snack instead of milk and cookies. With no junk food in the house, there are no temptations. Your sister will benefit greatly from healthy food.

Furthermore, as her older sibling, YOU have to be a good influence on your sister. Don't eat junkfood in front of her and make her see excercising as a fun activity and a competetive challenge (if she is competitive with you) rather than a chore. You have to excercise, eat well, and enjoy it if you want her to.

Good luck!

maybe tell her abut the health risks assoc. with being overweight...there are many, my parents did it the harsh way my making me go to the gym everyday...making me join the cross country team.....ans making me eat healthy...now i love working out..and am very healthy and have a normal weight. Tell her that this is for her and its her body that she has for her WHOLE LIFE...and not to screw it up.....shes only 11...so there is plenty of time...and reward her for drinking a lot of water by giving her little gifts...like lipgloss...or a little something or other...she's 11....if you work on it...shell be fine....i really appreciate yu wanting to do this for you r sister...and i'm sure she will too....your an amazing brother...and stay that way!!!
