In the set of real numbers, the square root of a negative number does not exist. However in the set of complex numbers a special " number " is defined such as ( i )^2 = -1 Now the square root of a negative number is possible. For example since ( 3i )^2 = 9 i^2 and i^2 = - 1 we get ( 3i )^2 = -9 .Then the square root of -9 is 3i.

Yes. For example, as you said: -3 x -3 = 9 and 3 x 3= 9.
A note for your knowledge: The problem is when you have to find the square root of a negative number, for example, the root of -9. In this case, mathematicians invented the number "i" which is equal to -1.
In this case then, 9 will be equal to 9 x-1 or 9 x i. thi number i is called "imaginary" and it is very useful in algebra.

not sure, but i don't think so because if the square root of 9 is 3 than the square root of -9 would be negative 3.

It is possible to have a negative square root. In the context of a story problem or any other problem that requires finding the square root, you need to determine if the negative root serves a useful purpose or is simply an unnecessary item.
Remember, this is different from the square root of a negative number which is defined as imaginary ie: the square root of -4 = 2i.

There are always two square roots of a number > 0, the positive and negative roots.
By convention, if someone refers to THE square root of a number, they mean the positive square root.
But I won't tell you what to write for your homework--you'll have to decide what your teacher is asking for based on the context.

Hope this helps.
