DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line. It is a fancy phone line. If you have DSL It iwll most likely (99% of the time) be purchase through your phone company. And it will be connected from your computer to the phone jack on the wall. BUT, there will be a box between the computer and the wall. The box will almost always be made by Siemens and usually is a "Speed Stream model????".
On the other hand, if there is a phone line going directly from the wall to your computer with nothing in between, you probably have Dial up. This is Not DSL and is MUCH slower and really just sucks in this day and age.
Other kinds of Internet connections are :"Cable Internet" these are easy to spot, because there will be a box connected between your computer and the cable. (as in cable tv cable. You know black thick cable with "screww on" cionnecter).
Sorry, aint got time to spell check.Give me best answer please. :) it was quick and its correct.

Introduction to How DSL Works
When you connect to the Internet, you might connect through a regular modem, through a local-area network connection in your office, through a cable modem or through a digital subscriber line (DSL) connection. DSL is a very high-speed connection that uses the same wires as a regular telephone line.
A cable modem is a type of modem that provides access to a data signal sent over the cable television infrastructure. Cable modems are primarily used to deliver broadband Internet access, taking advantage of unused bandwidth on a cable television network

Hello,
The way you find out is to contact your local provider and ask them is this Dial Up , that goes through the phone line connection,(DSL)? Or is this service through a cable modem,(serviced Not with a phone line but through your cable company like Cablevision or Time Warner Comcast)? Cable companies generally provide the High Speed Internet Faster Service for Cheap.

You have cable. If you check this link:
http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices
You'll notice references to cable. Another way to be sure:
Follow the line from your modem to the wall. If it goes into a phone jack, it's DSL.

DSL goes through the phone line, but you can still use the phone. Does your computer have a cable attatched, or a phone line?
