LOL... by the sound of their voice???
There is "something" that's usually way too subtle than I can quantify that makes me sense when someone's gay. You know... the ol' "gaydar" sense. :) Maybe something in a person's voice is a factor?
The one guy I know who claimed an ability to detect homosexuals eventually came out as homosexual, himself...

I've made the mistake of automatically classifying the male lisppy femme sound with gay men. Although it is possible, in my own experience I've made so many wrong conclusions by meeting poeple, thinking, oh, with that voice he's got to be gay, and then I see him put up a picture of his newly-born baby in his office. I know, he could theoretically still be "gay," but for all intents and purposes he's got a wife and newborn. I am in a situation now that until someone SAYS he is gay, I just don't classify, cuz I'm usually WRONG.

Well babe follow your instincts. That's not true. Having been out for a long time and having met many different people. I can assure you some have very masculine voices and some not so much. That goes for gay men or straight men. Voice alone to be able to tell someones sexual orientation. NOT

Oh, come on! He's being a jerk... and an ignorant one at that. Is it true that many homosexuals (the ones that are featured on mainstream TV and such) have more feminine voices? Yes, but straight guys have them, too. That's just a stereotype... you can't tell crap from a person's voice.

I believe that you can tell some people are gay by the way they talk, act, and dress. I am lesbian and have gay friends and I knew they were gay before they told me. How ever that does not always mean they are gay. Different people act in different ways. For the most part if you are gay or lesbian you know when others are gay too.

If this is true then we may also believe that there is a guy, who can tell someone's gay without even listening to their voice.. ha ha...

Actually, it's proved that most gay men talk the way they do because it makes them feel comfortable. That doesn't mean you can tell by the sound of their voice, but homosexuals do tend to have a flamboyant sound. Thus, I can see where your friend got his logic. (my gay friend told me.)

I think he's being a jerk. Maybe he is gay and won't admit it.
