If you look at your mother board there is a slot that the processor (CPU) slots into. This is where you insert your CPU chip. Dual core CPU chips have 2 processors in them, so you effectively have 2 CPU's. You can also have motherboards that have 2 available slots that can have two seperate CPU chips, with each chip being dual core, so your system would have the processing power of 4 CPU's.

Quad core CPU chips are now on the market, which have 4 CPU's on a single chip.

It has been shown that increasing the number of CPUs is better than increasing the CPU speed of a single chip to achieve performance, reduce temperature, and power usage.

tow cores in one.. its like having 2 processors in one..

From Intel
Intel dual-core processor consists of two complete execution cores in one physical processor (right), both running at the same frequency. Both cores share the same packaging and the same interface with the chipset/memory. Overall, an Intel dual-core processor offers a way of delivering more capabilities while balancing energy-efficient performance, and is the first step in the multi-core processor future.

It is almost like 2 CPUs inside the case of 1
Techincally it is 2 "dye" on one board
usually a CPU (single core) will have 1 dye per board.
the 2nd dye is your 2nd core.

The concept of the whole thing is that:
For example, you have a certain program that will run your single core CPU at 100%
if you were to have a dual core
you can run 2 of those programs

you would think it is 1 program per cpu
but, since i have one, i know it is different
if you were to run 1 program
it wil take 50% off of each dye
therefore, it will run your CPU less hard.

It is just something for people who like to multitask or have multiple internet windows open

The center of your CPU is known as the core. To operate a computer the fastest way, is to have 2 cpu's on one motherboard.
This new method is similar to having 2 cpu's, however, instead of taking up space, they placed one core on top of each other. A whole new technology. They are now working on Quad cores.

A multi-core microprocessor is one that combines two or more independent processors into a single package, often a single integrated circuit (IC). A dual-core device contains two independent microprocessors. In general, multi-core microprocessors allow a computing device to exhibit some form of thread-level parallelism (TLP) without including multiple microprocessors in separate physical packages. This form of TLP is often known as chip-level multiprocessing

Dual core refers to processors that act like two processors in one, which they accomplish by being designed with two cores.

The next generation in Processors. Until now you had one processor in your computer that did all the work. Well, look at it like this. You know that right brain, left brain thing? This would be like being able to use both sides of your brain at once, But doing two totally diffrent things.
