I'm trying to set up a wireless network for a desktop that only has USB 1.1 connections. I'm hoping to use a USB wireless network adapter but they are all USB 2.0 - I'd rather not add a PCI card if I can just plug in a USB adapter. Will the USB 2.0 wireless network adapter work with USB 1.1? I have had mixed success plugging in USB 2.0 devices into this USB 1.1 port (one usb stick will work, another won't be recognized). Do I need some updates?

It's dicey... Most adapters will work in USB 1.1 ports, just at reduced speeds.

The easiest solution is to buy a USB 2.0 PCI card- snap that in, and all your future USB headaches are solved. They only cost around $12, so the money/hassle ratio is very low.

nicely on a computing gadget it is not so elementary as plugging in a Firewire PCI card on condition that there are not any PCI slots to plug it into. ;) The cable is expensive for a reason because of the fact a Firewire gadget isn't purely changing to a distinctive connector to make it USB. It has to transform standards from IEEE 1394 (Firewire) to USB. pass with the workstation Card adapter the guy above stated.

It should work, but all speeds or extra USB 2 functions would be limited to USB 1.

It should work fine. USB2.0 peripherals are backwards compatible with USB1.1. ALTHOUGH, your data throughput will be much slower if the 2.0 device needs to go at 1.1 speeds. It will work, just be a bit slower.

if this is a desktop get a usb 2.0 board
usb 2 is faster and can put power to your devices that need it and it is fully backwards compadible with usb1.1
