Why do Democrats support it?

Simple...opinions.

Dems think it's alright, GOPer don't.

And like they say, opinions are like armpits, everyone has a couple and they stink.

Why did 2/3s of the Democrats in Congress in 1996 vote for the Defence of Marriage Act? Why did Pres. Clinton sign it? Why are so many rank-and-file Democrat Party voters voting in favor of banning gay marriage at the ballot box?

The religious right Christians in the United States are so far removed from Christianity that they might as well join up with the religious right Islamics. They are both groups of Nut Cases that go outside the bounds of their religion. Funny also that most of these religious right wing Christian fanatics are inspired by nuts like Gerry Falwell and Pat Robertson who are both proven Nut Cases.

Because it is not natural, it is against Gods law, it is not what builds a family. Yes I know many gays have either had or adopted children and most are well balanced etc. and may provide a better home than many heterosexuals

A large portion of them belong to the religious right and for them, homosexuality is an abomination.

because some people have gay friends and family members so they don't want other people to turn out like that and the also don't want to turn that way themselves so they are against gay marriages.
