Wouldn't the opposite of hate really be apathy? Love and hate share a similar intense feeling....apathy, however, is just not caring at all. What makes me think of this is a poem I recently read called "Ah, Are You Digging on My Grave?"......

'Ah, are you digging on my grave
My loved one? -- planting rue?'
-- 'No: yesterday he went to wed
One of the brightest wealth has bred.
"It cannot hurt her now," he said,
"That I should not be true."'

'Then who is digging on my grave?
My nearest dearest kin?'
-- 'Ah, no; they sit and think, "What use!
What good will planting flowers produce?
No tendance of her mound can loose
Her spirit from Death's gin." '

'But some one digs upon my grave?
My enemy? -- prodding sly?'
-- 'Nay: when she heard you had passed the Gate
That shuts on all flesh soon or late,
She thought you no more worth her hate,
And cares not where you lie.'

'Then, who is digging on my grave?
Say -- since I have not guessed!'
-- 'O it is I, my mistress dear,
Your little dog, who still lives near,
And much I hope my movements here
Have not disturbed your rest?'

'Ah, yes! You dig upon my grave....
Why flashed it not on me
That one true heart was left behind!
What feeling do we ever find
To equal among human kind
A dog's fidelity!'

'Mistress, I dug upon your grave
To bury a bone, in case
I should be hungry near this spot
When passing on my daily trot.
I am sorry, but I quite forgot
It was your resting-place.'

I've never heard that the opposite of hate is love. What I heard is that the two are closely related.

Yes I agree. I wrote a song once about an ex-boyfriend called "Indifference" ("the opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference...") Once I stopped being angry & hateful, I realized I felt nothing at all for him. If you hate someone you used to love, you really still love them, you're just intensely angry that they betrayed or hurt you. Hatred is a very strong emotion, the flip side of love. You could say that hate & love are opposites because one is positive & the other negative but indifference, apathy (the lack of emotion) is the true opposite of both. The opposite of feeling is to feel nothing at all. Cool poem by the way! But the poet is probably feigning apathy. He remembers. He's just trying to play it cool.

What is this, an agreement contest?

I will tell you why hate is the opposite of love.
For any person with an INTEREST in another person, there is a spectrum of feeling for the other ranging from extreme affinity to mild, a friend -- and mild to extreme enmity on the opposite side. In between these poles there is no 'indifference'. Having an interest in the other is a condition on the possibility of affinity or enmity as such. To say that love and hate share a common opposite is therefore misguided, since it also implies that hate is identical to love. They are identical with respect to passion, but not to the quality of the passion.

It is like confusing the opposite of purple, not for yellow, but with black.

The best defense of betrayed love is hate. Hate is too passionate in its own right and does not require love to begin with in order to rage on. Some people hate and dispise that which they don't even know (racism for instance and love had nothing to do with it)...so...
Not caring at all about someone (indifference) would have to be the opposite of hate.

I think the opposite of love is indifference.
--------------------------------------------------
The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land
Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky:
A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers,
But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking
He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
He's chained forever to a world that's departed
It's not enough, it's not enough
His blood has frozen & curdled with fright
His knees have trembled & given way in the night
His hand has weakened at the moment of truth
His step has faltered
One world, one soul
Time pass, the river rolls
And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
And silent replies that swirl invitation
Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
A grim intimation of what is to be
There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night
And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
And silence that speaks so much louder that words,
Of promises broken

To Love something or someone is to hate it's lacking, just as to hate something or someone is relative to that which is loved, thus they are relative degrees like hot and cold etc. This may lead one to think of them as opposites yet a man will sacrifice his very life for the one he loves and will never consider the same based soley on the one he hates!

As for the notion thast indifference can be construed as the opposite of love, I argure how can that be, if hate can be reflected in the same indifference!

More worthy is it to contemplate those aspect of love that we often ignore the relationship to and they are compassion and pity. All manners of love at least psychologically are rooted in these components and they are aspects that hate has no relationship to!

hate is the opposite of love. i agree that being apathetic towards someone or something is worse than hating it though. would you say that 5 is not the opposite of -5 but rather 0 is. because both 5 and -5 share the quality of being something while zero is not.

5 vs -5
0 vs non zero, 'n'
hate vs love
apathy vs any feeling

so love or hate are opposite of apathy but only in the sense that they are something and not nothing.

i'm a Christian social liberal so I actually have reliable ideals in following the Holy Bible. John 8:7 "If everybody of you is without sin, enable him be the first to throw a stone at her". we've conflicting topics right here, on one hand we've the sensible social concern and on the different hand we've the non secular social concern. And in my case I attempt to envision what Christ would do and stand for. for the reason that Christ became continuously attempting to educate the Pharisees about loving God and loving guy and they resisted with more desirable regulations. i locate the entire abortion concern extremely nerve-racking, some help a ban on abortion yet help a conflict for income. i understand Christ became worried with the entire international, he believed you ought to win the soul before you ought to replace their habit. i do not propose to be to wordy, yet I actually have many gay friends that i understand God loves. I actually have many friends which have had abortions that i understand God loves. Sin is sin and all of us have it you could't legislate morality, it is God's area.
