There are notions that all animals (except humans) can talk to each other. Does this make anyone feel offended for the animals? Humans can talk to other humans, what gives us the right to assume that all other animals can communicate with each other?

I suppose it is offensive, because not only do we personify the animal, granting it the ability to communicate, the animal also understands a wide range of animal 'languages' we deem to be mere signal systems... So they seem quite intelligent, sympathetic, in comaraderie with their natural society, and we humans are wicked for interrupting all that 'civilization'.

I would think that very specialized communication ("speaking") would be limited to the same or similar species.

However, speaking isn't the only way we (and animals) communicate. You can still get a simple message across to someone, even if you don't speak the same language and animals are the same. That's why some specific behaviors/signs are universal (the warning signs a skunk gives before it sprays something is understood by many different types of animals, the bright colors on poisonous animals that warn other animals not to eat/attack it, ect) and do allow animals to "talk" to each other.

I'd be offended if the poor animals could understand US. That would be terrifying.

And it is not a right... just an idea... and one remarkably hard to prove at that. Try a sweat lodge ceremony... sometimes the rocks speak...

I think that all animal "speech " is confined to the specie and in case of birds to the variety.
