You should have at least 10 viewable, and very observable slides, and or pictures. At least 3 to 5 most recent and that reflect your strongest abilities and the rest may convey other works that you have experience and talent in. This is if you are trying to enter art school.

However if you applied for an exhibition or employment 10 to 15 is great. It is also a great idea to have some sort of cards with your image on them to leave behind.

An artist portfolio should contain an ample amount of work that displays your range of artistic abilities but should not exceed 12 pieces. The amount is important. Typically you do not want to overwhelm the gallery owner with too many pieces at one time. The object is to show your best work to attract interest... they will ask to see more. Remember to show pieces that are suitable for the gallery or client commission you are pursuing. Visit the gallery to make sure your work will fit in at that particular location. There is a good book that explains how to set up an artist portfolio - "Making It As An Artist" written by professional artist JoAnn DePolo. You may want to check it out.

I dont think that there is an exact number that one must have in a portfolio of works. This would depend on the artist and how many you want to show. The art should include a cross section of your best artworks.

If you're applying to an art program at a university/college, check their admission requirements or ask to speak with a representative of admissions. They will let you know the minimum amount of pieces they expect to see in your application portfolio. From what I've seen, it can range anywhere from eight to twenty pieces, so it's best to confirm with them how much you'll need. It also helps to make sure the work you select is relevant to the program you're applying to-- i.e., illustrative work for an Illustration program, sculpture for a Sculpture program.

If you're referring to just a professional portfolio, the amount ranges. Remember, however, that it isn't quantity. It's quality. A portfolio stocked with fifty works that may not be your finest is not half as indicative of professionalism as a smaller one filled with your best work. Pick work that reflects your artist's statement (if you have one) and reflect you as an individual.

~Well, I like to keep my accounts balanced so for each piece of art, I try to have at least 3 blue chip stocks, 5 agressive stocks and 2 guaranteed income accounts or treasury stocks, all with comporable initial basis.
