He could have realized, there would be a lot of people who would not understand the words, or comprehand what he was saying. Can anyone explain how the President could declare that the Sailors on the ship had Completed their mission successfully and yet the people hearing him would think he was referring to every war that had ever been waged since the begginning of time!

A direct quote from President Bush aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln:

"In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed."

In other words he was not speaking exclusively to the "sailors on the ship." He was making a public address aboard an American naval ship. I’d rather not argue semantics but the quote does sound a whole lot like “Mission Accomplished” to me.

"Bush stated at the time that this was the end to major combat operations in Iraq but this assertion — and the sign — became controversial after conflict in Iraq increased during the Iraqi insurgency. The vast majority of casualties, among both US, UK and Iraqi combatants, and from Iraqi civilians, occurred after the speech."

He never said "Mission Accomplished". It was on a banner on the USS Abraham Lincoln. That task force HAD accomplished its mission.

You're right. He was just declaring that major battles were over in Iraq. That's all, nothing more. Thanks, asker.
