An egg cell has copious cytoplasm with huge number of mitochondria and ribosomes. The cytoplasm may be variously loaded with yolk produced during pachytene of primary oocyte stage. As a result the egg may be more than 1000 times bigger than a sperm. An egg has a vitelline membrane over the plasma membrane. There is a protein on the egg cell surface that recognizes the protein of the head of the sperm.Egg is produced in the ovary.
Sperm is produced in the testis. During spermiogensis, considerable amount of cytoplasm is peeled off as a result of which the amount of cytoplasm is minimal and there is no ER, and other organelles. The reduced Golgi complex forms acrosome and some mitochondria fuse to form the middle piece. The body of sperm has three parts: head, neck, middle piece and tail. The middle piece bears the centriole. The acrosome secretes the enzyme hyalorunidase which dissolves the egg membrane and this helps in the entry of the head of the sperm into the egg. the confers motility.

A sperm cell is made mainly for locomotion- to get its DNA package to the egg cell. It has a tail that propels it forward, a head filled with DNA, and a few mitochondria to give it the energy to move. Once it has fulfilled its purpose, the sperm cell disintegrates. And egg cell, or ovum, is made to become the host of the sperm's DNA and to grow into an embryo. It has all major organelles and lots of cytoplasm for nourishment. It cannot move on its own; it must be swept along in a current generated by small hair-like structures in the fallopian tubes. It is also much larger than a sperm cell. Also, while men may produce millions of sperm in a day, women generally only produce one ovum per month (there are exceptions), and begin life with a set number of potential egg cells.

The main difference is in the way that they divide. In spermatogenesis, the sperm cells divide equaly, both taking a fairly equal amount of cytoplasm, and therefore the males can make many, many sperm cells per division (if each cell divides twice, that's 4 viable sperms cells). Since the female isn't more worried about quality than quantity, each division is very unequal, with the vast majority of the cytoplasm (containing the nutrients that will help to start the baby's development) going to one cell and not the other. Because of this, whereas the sperm division gives four out of four viable cells, the ovum division only gives one out of four viable eggs.

The unequal division produces 3 polar bodies, not zygotes. Zygote is a fertilized ovum that has not divided.

Both are super specilized single cells. As mentioned, sperm have a highly compact cell body with minimal cytoplasm. They have a long flagella with mitochondrial sheath and an acrosome at the tip of the head which is used to gain entry into the egg.

The egg has numerous surrounding layers (zonula pellucida) that is required for fertilization. Proteins on the outer layer react with acrosomal enzymes to allow only one sperm into the egg (via the fast and slow blocks). The egg also has abundant cytoplasm and energy stores.

a sperm cell is MUCH smaller than an eg cell and has a tail for mobility. They both carry the same amount of chromosomes (23 each) that form the dna chain of 23 pair.

Yup, just one that made you. You are an original. Because your father's sperm determines your sex, you could have been a boy. You would still have the same DNA from your mom though. Just think of it this way, you were stronger than all of those other little swimmers. I think about this sometimes too, I got to that egg first. I wouldn't be here if I didn't. Weird.

They both went through the process of Meiosis, but the sperm cell ended up in four equal cells and the egg cell ended up with one bigger functional egg and three smaller nonfunctional zygotes... I just learned about that today in Biology

Sperm are made by men, who start producing them around puberty. Creation of sperm requires thousands of mitotic replications.

Eggs are made by women around the 4th-5th week of gestation. They are partially developed...in other words, they freeze at meiosis I and do not complete meiosis until they are ovulated. Women do not begin ovulating until puberty. Women's eggs do not undergo mitotic replications.

I like some of the other answers too, like the size of the sperm and egg.
