First, I am not sure that this is the appropriate category for this question. Second, you are only going to make people angry and defensive by being this antagonistic.

That being said, yes, I really do wish it was illegal. As other users have said, it is the equivalent of surgically removing a person's finger up to their first knuckle. It is a major surgery, one that is very painful for the animal--it is not some commonplace procedure like many people think it is. It can potentially traumatize the feline and change its personality.

Clawing problems can be alleviated with behavioral techniques. If that fails, there are several other methods you can try without resorting to destructive surgery.

Did you know you can buy plastic sheaths for your cat's claws? They are called "Soft Paws." I strongly recommend them to anyone who is considering declawing their cat. Please don't, this is much better for them! I have used them before on one of my cats with great success.

Those same American's are often the ones who shout loudest about animals rights. Try telling them they are abusing the animal just as much as any research lab and they'll give you a hundred reasons why they are not! They dont see their own cruelty because they dont care if the cat NEEDS its claws to groom itself or climb as nature intended! They care only that the cat will scratch their precious furniture! We have to train ours not to and most of us succeed! Don't they even realise it's a lot cheaper to provide a scratching post than to have the procedure carried out!

To Katie T I say, "You are 'only' an animal of a different species! So can I pull your nails off for you?"
I'd rather have my CATS than people like you any day!

yes they should.

it IS cruel! it makes NO DIFFERENCE whether the cat is indoor or outdoor based. cats have instincts which they need their claws for: running and stopping (especially on indoor carpet), burying (even indoors!), digging (in the kitty litter), and climbing (scratching posts, and even wallpaper) - it's all about GRIP!!! not to mention the odd bit of scratching an itch.

if they do it on the grounds of "it claws my furniture", "not the curtains" or "stop clawing my lap" - then train the cat, it really isn't difficult and only takes a bit of effort and perseverance.

you can get a vet to trim the claws (DO NOT do this at home) which is safe as long as the nerve ending is avoided, this blunts the claw a little - but i don't even do this to my cat.

if they can't be bothered to put in a bit of effort and train it then they shouldn't keep cats! (or any animal)

It should be illegal. :-/

"Contrary to most people's understanding, declawing consists of amputating not just the claws, but the whole phalanx (up to the joint), including bones, ligaments, and tendons! To remove the claw, the bone, nerve, joint capsule, collateral ligaments, and the extensor and flexor tendons must all be amputated. Thus declawing is not a “simple”, single surgery but 10 separate, painful amputations of the third phalanx up to the last joint of each toe. A graphic comparison in human terms would be the cutting off of a person's finger at the last joint of each finger."

Yes....especially now that you are calling them evil bastards....they are sure to stop now.

But I agree with stopping the declawing...just not how you go about expressing your views about it.
Americans tend to be the most animal friendly people on earth....no other country has as many animal protecting laws as they do in America.

it's not really evil. although i agree with you, that it's cruel, it's people's own choices to do what they wish with their animals, and if the cat's an indoor cat, then they don't really need their claws for defense, and they don't even feel the procedure anyway, so I don't think it should be prohibited, but I wish it were done less often, there are tons of other alternatives. I don't de-claw my cats, I just use spray that they don't like, so they don't scratch up my furniture!

Yes, and I do know of some vets that will do it, but tell you why it is not a good idea and what it does to the cat. It should be stopped now.

Yes, of course. It's stupid.

You do know that most Americans don't do that, right?

People can just clip the nails, but then again that would mean paying attention to their pet.

I also disagree with de-clawing cats, and I live in our GREAT NATION OF THE UNITED STATES!!!
But, my god, you are going about it the wrong way to put your message across...Try being a little bit nicer with your wording, and people might listen.

If the cat is an indoor cat, then it should be de-clawed, cuz if it isn't then it will tear EVERYTHING up. If it is an outdoor cat, then it has to have claws to survive, and if you take away their claws and make them live outside then that's just evil.
