Clue, Monopoly, etc are classics and all, but there is so much more out there. If you can find them, check out these:

If you like Monopoly --> Settlers of Catan
If you like Clue --> Mystery of the Abbey
If you like Risk (esp the Lord of the Rings version) --> War of the Ring
If you like Heroscape --> Memoir '44 (or alternatively BattleLore or BattleCry)
If you like Dungeons and Dragons or HeroQuest --> Descent: Journeys in the Dark (or alternatively Doom: the boardgame)

Also for something "different", check out:
Carcasonne
Zombies!!!
Ticket To Ride

If you're looking for a little more complexity, my personal favorite game is:
Arkham Horror

Lord of the Rings Risk is perhaps the best Risk variant, in my opinion. However, it is hard to get the game going if prior Risk experience isn't had. It can be pretty long and complicated, although not near as long as the original (1 hour vs. 3-4 hours). Great game, but really requires a good head and a good memory.

Risk is a really good strategy game. Aim is to take over the world. It's quite complicated to understand to start with and is best with three or more players, but once it gets going it's really great!

The game is made by Hasbro.

The board has a (quite outdated and rather vague) world map divided into continents. Each player is dealt out random countries and has to either take over the whole world or complete a mission. Each round you get a certain number of troops depending on how many countries you have and bonuses if you own an entire continent. You then choose who to attack etc. To decide who wins or loses the attack you roll dice.

I always played Risk and Monopoly growing up, so I tend to think they are the best. I LOVE Lord of the Rings, so Lord of the Rings Risk is a good choice also.
For a quick set up Monopoly is probably the best choice as Risk tends to take longer and require more attention payed to your strategies.

This is not a strategy game, but teens are into the Scene-It board games. Geeky ones (such as I used to be almost 2 decades ago) enjoy games like Trivial Pursuit.

Chess. Pure and simple and yet you can never stop learning it. No matter how good you get someone can beat you. It is fun and requires thought. Many teenagers learn Chess at that time in their lives. And most never forget how to play or stop playing it over the years, even if infrequently.
Also Risk and Monopoly and Life are great too, but they are partly fixed to one line of thinking and partly rely on chance. Chess only relies on the persons playing.

I've always liked the game Stratego. I play it all the time. Its a great strategy game a lot like chess, but you have more control of the game. Also, its pretty classic, so you can find it anywhere. The only problem is that you can only play with two people.

Clue and Risk are both good...

If they saw the Lord of the Rings movies, they'd enjoy their version of Risk because stuff from the movies will be in there.
