So the mold will be a "push" or "press" mold. What molding material can stand up to being pressed into without distortion?

There are various materials that can be used to cast polymer clay in.... some are stiff, and some are flexible but may still be stiff enough to push the clay into (or which could be used with a "mother mold" behind them for more rigidity).

Which one you might want to use could depend on how large your item is, whether there are undercuts, cost, availability, etc.

Both regular and flexible polymer clays can be used to make molds, and various kinds of polymer clay can be cast in various types of molds (purchased or home-made).

For info on all those things, check out this page at my site:

Two materials....Sculpey Mold Maker will make flexible, highly detailed molds from your model and Super Sculpey which will make a hard, porcelain like push mold. Both are available at
www.dickblick.com. On the home page, type polymer clay into the search and you will find a list of all the polymer clay products they offer as well as descriptions of the products.
