He needs to deposit a total minimum of $5.
He tough he had $27 dollars, he withdrew $20 then with drew $12 which gives him a balance of -$ 5. hence he must deposit $5 to cover balance.

27 - (20 + 12) = B
27 - 32 = B
-5 =B

since B is balance. then that is the amount you owe and the amount you need to to pay to avoid and insufficient balance.
which is $5.

27 - 12 -20= -5, so he needs to deposite $5. Just find the difference between the amount in the account and the amount that he spent or removed.

27 dollars initially - $12 for the cd = $15 - 20 withdrawn = -5, so 5 dollars would be needed to bring his balance to zero
