It is a very ancient tradition. In the days of the Persian Empire a birthday was the most important of festivals. The tradition of celebrating birthday spread from the Persians to the Romans and from them throughout Europe.

Personally I celebrate my parents on Mother's day, and Father's day. Also on their birthdays. If I am ever luck enough to be blessed with children then I shall celebrate their birthdays - as a parent I would prefer to give to my children then receive off them.

Anyway this is what I think about this.

it is a very special day for both us, our parents, siblings and the rest of the family. it is a day set aside to celebrate the making of us and to record a new year in our life span. and although we cant remember it because our memory was not quite established when it happened, we also did a fair ammount of work on the day of our births. therefore, birthdays and celebrating is a great concept.

In ancient china birthdays are celebrated for the mother. It makes up for the pain the mother had to go through to give birth to the baby. Im not sure about the western people :p.

My last birthday was a bit of an open house. People started coming by at 5.30pm and the last one left at 1.30AM. Then, two days later, another smaller event that a friend did for me.
All rather nice.
Maybe we do it because it is fun!

Because we're greedy Americans who will do anything for gifts, even if it means making up holidays. I believe Americans in general basically look for any reason possible to get and exchange gifts (but mainly to get them). In a few years we'll probably be exchanging gifts on the fourth of July, Veterans day, Memorial day, and halloween.

Bakers sell more cake, Hallmark sells more cards, The post office sells more stamps. Stores sell more gifts.
The secret is to keep the economy floating in another way. Besides it's nice to have a day where all your friends and family honor you.

Why shouldn't we. We are celebrating the anniversary of the day that we were born. We celebrate wedding anniversaries so why not birthdays, to me ,they are more important
