The use of ebonics in music and film

If you like, you can use the word "lately" to stretch as far back as the 1930's, because really, that's when this phenomenon began, and it's been continuing in some form or other ever since. Or do the subcultures and lingo of blues, swing, jazz, R&B, and rock and roll, and their effect in creating the zoot suiters, country singers, beat poets, rockabillies, hippies, metalheads, and punks not "count"? Not that intend any meanness with the scarequotes, just a point to make.

The reason for this is a little trickier to explain, and there are a lot of theories about it, some contradictory. I would say that the admiration for a people who are still affected by the color of their skin allows white people to offset their own bewilderment and vague guilt at the ongoing oppression. Naturally, it shocks white parents, although they certainly have a decent excuse when they can point at rap lyrics glorifying violence, etc. Mostly, I suppose that this sort of cultural mixing simply happens because it does, and it's more or less equal all around, but race is something we tend to notice before religion and nationality, and white people "acting black" seems a lot stranger than black people "acting white" because "white" still gets to be the "default" culture. Not that I'm accusing anyone of overt or even covert racism; it's a lot subtler than that.

Ultimately, we can only hope that the "mixing" continues in one form or another, and that it will lead to ever more social justice, although this seems unlikely with the current (and reasonable) association by whites of "ghetto" culture with moral shortcomings and bling-bling superficiality. We might even eventually reach the point where the idea that "white people" and "black people" actually exist (beyond a social realm) will become a reality.

You know what I agree..this is a stupid question. I think you are trying to stir up some s@#$. When I was in middle school and high school I was teased because people said I talked like a white girl. That was the dumbest and most ignorant statement to say just like this question you want answers too. I was happy that my white friend stood up for me and said that I talk like I have class and intelligence. Not all black people talk with slang, use curse words, and say the "N" word. I personally don't like the use of the "N" word no matter what race. I also think that the black race should stop using it but I know that will never happen. I guess I don't have an answer to your question..I just wanted to state my opinion.

I do not see anything wrong with this. I do not like that our culture has so many negative things associated with it mainly the thug life thing, but I think it is good for people to look at and even embrace other cultures. I love Italian and German culture. I have been told that I wish I were these races, no, I don't, I just like them.

the inmpact of the influence we get from other races. you will hear it alot from teens who may have many friends who use slang because that is how their group or the ethnicity they spend time with talk and have influenced them to do so. or it could be extreme admiration for the likeness of a certain race or color for belief that life would be better if we were that color; such as, if i were this color people would accept me, or, if i were this color i would get this job or these opportunites. also, now that the term of slang has spread , it's no longer labeled for "black people" and is just a certain way of improper language.

Nika2683 & Tripper said it well.

By the way people, the word wigger is just as insulting to me as the word n*gger because by calling a white person that "acts" black a wigger (a white n*gger), you are implying that black people are n*ggers.

My school is new, maybe 2 years, and its dominant race is African American. In my school there's alot of "wiggers" since African American is the majority of the student population. Since it is the main race, maybe other people want to fit in with the crowd?

I don't know but I think all kids who don't speak proper English should be grounded until they learn how to speak like a human being.
