You either have a bad battery, bad power cord, or the outlet you used doesn't have an active current.

You could have a bad charging board. Call the manufacturer and see if they offer a charging daughter board to be purchased. If you feel adventurous, take apart the laptop and swap out that part. If not, take it to a repair shop, expect to pay a bit more for this though, most places cringe at the thought of taking apart a laptop.
Could also be a bad battery. if its over two years or so old, then its time to replace the battery anyways. if its been slowly not holding as long of a charge, then it was its time to go. Does your laptop power up at least? If not, the connection to the motherboard could have pried loose from the DC socket, or your AC/DC is fried. Get a volt meter and measure the output of the AC/DC converter. If that is greek to you, run it down to an electronics repair shop or computer repair shop and have them do it, takes all of 30 seconds.
Good luck!

Most laptops (notebook computers) available use Lithium ion rechargeable batteries since they have a low weight and discharge slowly when not in use. However, they last for a shorter time compared to other batteries and can be dangerous when overheated. More information at http://fixit.in/laptopbattery.html

I am sorry that I do not know how this has happened, well at least for sure.
Perhaps you did not check your lab top before you turned it off.
If you do not get any help, I suggest you call for a quick computer specialist to check out your computer.
Good Luck on getting answers!
