we just got our interims and i have a weak/failing in algebra. the first marking period i had a A+ but we only had one quiz and one test on the same chapter. i had trouble with this chapter and so i failed both. but a few other students out of the class of nine did too. i know i can bring it up to an A but how should i tell my parents ? they are strict and my mom just got me this expensive straightner i had asked for. i feel guilty and its almost the end of the day and i didnt tell them yet. im confident i can bring it up because we had a quiz today and i did well. i feel so guilty ! what should i do ?!!!!!

interims are like halfway through the marking period to let your parents know what to expect on your report card.

You're saying your entire grade is based on 2 tests? That doesn't sound right. Have you asked the teacher about doing something for extra credit?

Whatever you do - tell your Mom. Also tell her you are willing to learn from this and do whatever it takes to bring the grade back up.

Sorry about the bad grade. I have a junior in high school and I know it can be a struggle.

I suggest you simply go say "Mom, Dad, can I talk to you a minute? I wanted to tell you that I hit a bump in the road re: Algebra. I'll give you the details in a minute, but I also want to assure you that I'm as disappointed about it as you will be, and that I have already had another quiz/test that I'm sure I did well on. I struggled with the specific material a bit ago, but I understand it now..." (e.g. got extra help from the teacher, etc....assuming that you truly DO understand the work you messed up on earlier...) "I know it's important for my grades to be good -- and even more important that I learn this material. I'll work hard to get the average back up to where it should be."

If they freak out during the conversation, remain calm and when you get the opportunity to speak again, simply get back into your talk. Clearly you're a responsible person, and a caring one. I suspect and hope that they'll be supportive of you if you come to them this way.

Best of luck to you -- on the Algebra and with your parents!

ok i know how you feel. what you should do is go to the teacher and ask her/him if you could stay after school to go over the chapter that you didn't understand (don't be embarrassed, im a strait A student (except spelling) and i do that all the time). after you stay after school, than you tell your parents. say, "mom, i didn't do so well on my last math test and quiz because i didn't understand the material, but i stayed after school and now i get it, but im sorry for doing bad, and i know i'll do better next time." or "mom, i didn't do so well on my last math test and quiz because i didn't understand the material, and even though i stayed after school with mr./ms. _______ i still don't understand, so im going to stay after school again on __________ to get some more help. im sorry for getting a bad grade, but once i understand, i know that i'll do better next time." no parent, no matter how strict they are can get mad at that. how you can bring the F up to an A is you have to get 3 or 4 A's per F to get your grade up (depends on how high the A is). so if you have 3 F's than you have to get three or four times more A's. (how this works. 1 A + 1 F = D ; 1 A + 1 D = C; 1 A + 1 C = B; 1 A + 1 B = A... see?) hope this helps.

Go and tell your parents and explain to them exactly what you did here. If 1/3 of your class did not do well you may want to ask your teacher about this. Perhaps the test did not measure what you studied well or you will need/want some extra help. Propose a study session (that will also look good to your parents that you are taking it seriously). Also remember that one bad grade does not define you and we all have off days.

It bites when you get a bad grade, but you have to deal with it. Tell your parents ahead of time abotu the grde and explain that you studied but just didn't get it. If they want reassurance that you'll do better than talk to your teacher about what you did wrong so they feel like you're making an effort to do better. And also study for your upcoming test (obviously) and make sure you understand the material completely.

Algebra really isn't that hard once you understand it.

Well I'm only in 5Th grade but the same thing happened to me! In Math i used to always get A+'s but i failed a test on decimals. Anyway, i would tell my mom or dad what had happened and why you got that bad grade. If you cant think of anything approach them and say "we took a test on algebra that i didn't do so well on. I would understand if you grounded me or i can have a tutor for algebra". My parents understood and helped me and supported me when i needed them.

You have to sit down with your mother and father and express to them how you feel. Tell them that you studied hard for this chapter, but regardless you didn't understand it. Perhaps you can get some extra help for it (I know that can be degrading, but everyone needs it sometime). Tell them that you are confident you can bring it back up, and do so. There should be no problem.

You should tell your parents exactly what you said here. It is quite obvious that you care enough about your work to be able to raise your grades back up. Don't be scared to talk to your parents- they have failed at some things in life, without a doubt. Don't stress, and Good Luck!
