Barney is a total douche, but I am quite confident that he was packin' some serious heat in his prehistoric jeans, otherwise Betty would not have given him the time of day. He was a nimrod, but I think he and Fred had one of those dude-lovin' relationships going on on the side.
Why else do you think they spent so much time at the Water Buffalo Lodge?!?

Aww, Barney is a pretty good guy for a neighbor. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but basically a nice guy... Now Fred, he is the douchebag...such a wiseass, treats Barney like crap most of the time. Actually, Betty is somewhat of a prehistoric hotty, but do not understand how they got over the size differance between men and women back then... Looks like to me, one good romp would pretty much split her apart... Maybe their units were unusually small back then.....

I'd say Barney is the latter of the two choices. I think Betty must have been pregnant and felt compelled to marry Barney. She could have done much better. Like marrying Mr. Slate.
