At break at work today a co-worker was talking about a movie copying program he has. He contends that it's legal to copy dvd movies he owns - then a dozen opinions followed. So - to settle this, does anyone have a link showing the legalities of this?

I am not too sure if anyone has specifically stated you can only have one copy. I always thought the law read that you could not make available copyrighted material to anyone who did not have persmission to use the copyrighted material. By purchasing this material, you get permission. However, proper use of material does not allow for distribution to any person or entity that does not have permission. So, if you bought it, copy away, but no one else may legally obtain sole use of the material [i.e. watching the movie, listening to the music on a CD, etc] by acquiring it through you. Now, you can have friends over at a party and watch the movie, but you cannot through use of the material earn any sort of income. If you do make some sort of income, you then owe the copyright owner royalties or jail time or both, whichever the copyright owner prefers. I burn/copy CDs all the time. The original CD for the stereo, the .cda [never mp3 files...they sound terrible even at high bit rates] files for my computer, and a burned copy for my car---all perfectly legal as long as I do not sell or give away any of it.
