We are in debt because there are too many people with their hand out to the government. There are too many politicians who are willing to sell out future by buying the next election with these handouts. We have too much government. Until the people of this nation hold politician accountable we will continue to be in debt. Part of the reason we have so much debt is our trade deficit with many nations, such as China. We keep buying poorly manufactured products made in China and other 3rd world countries to save a few cents. We send more money to these countries than they send us. Our elected officials have been willing accomplices in sending many of our good paying manufacturing jobs overseas. This further complicates our deficit since we make fewer products which we can sell to other nations. To stay abreast of our debt the U.S. government continues to live beyond it's means and borrows money. Since countries don't go bankrupt, we just print more money. There is no reason this country should not be debt free. Our government has an addiction to credit just as the majority of our population.

The national debt is the debt of the federal government. The government is in debt because it spends more money than it brings in.

If a country spends more money than it collects in tax revenues it acquires a deficit. When you add all of the deficits together you get the national debt. So basically America is in debt because it spends more money than it collects in taxes.
