Here are a couple of thoughts.
Are you sure your copy of XP is a legal copy. Do you have the Windows XP Disc in your posession?
Are you able to download the "security" updates okay?
To see exactly what updates you do have, go to http://www.belarc.com and download and let run their "Advisor".
This will tell you all kinds of great info about your pc and it will also list all the upgrades and Service Packs that are installed and it will tell you which one are installed as compared to the latest Microsoft list of them.
Look under the "licenses" section and next to Windows XP it will also give you the Product Key of the XP that is installed on your PC.
Hope this helps.

Same problem as me - a previous owner of my PC had installed a pirated copy of Xp Pro and even though I formatted with Xp Home(legal) I had a hard time updating until a long search of the registry turned up the hidden Xp pro details which I deleted and then ran a windows repair (just to be on the safe side) and everything turned out fine.
Good luck

I'd say SP3 is pretty important 'cause a lot of the latest software doesn't run on anything older than SP3 (some not even on XP). It would be better to just upgrade to Windows 7( assuming you have a powerful enough pc ), XP is slowly getting obsolete.

just go to windows downloads type a search Sp2 all Microsoft.the only thing blocking it wood be a yellow bar at top of screen this is activex towards the middle tick and allow download.has your system been authenticated.if its a copy they will haunt you.its not that important anyway because Sp2 gets that many security leaks your forever downloading hot-fixes.its just a pain

Being used you may have a bad COA. If you do you will have to call MicroSoft to work it out. I had this happen to my brother. The person I bought it from had installed the same licence on 7 computers.
Have you tried to do a update through Microsoft Updates. If it will not allow you touse the update also that will more than likely be your problem.
