Right-click on the gray area of your taskbar, not on a task, and select from the resulting menu "Task Manager". Or hit "Control-alt-delete" and select "Task Manager". Click on Processes, and click on the topic heading "CPU" enough times to get the processes that occupy the most time to the top. This will tell you what processes are hogging your computer. Close the programs or halt them with Task Manager (select it and click "End Process"), but be careful - don't end explorer.exe, as that will bomb your computer and force you to reboot.

If this doesn't help, the gremlins from somewhere else are slowing your PC.

I am assuming that you are using Windows XP or 2000.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

thre are a few ways you can go about this, the first is to remove unwanted programs from your add/remove list found in your control panel folder, or you could try cleaning your hard drive with the clean disk function, you also can use the defragmenter which helps to defragment files to use less space, you also can try to use the restore point from an earlier time the computer have certain restore points that allows you to go back to original settings etc. finally on a compaq pc (if you have one) have a system recovery feature before your operating system boots up requires a partition disk which comes with computer (mines anyway)

go to the control panel and check Add/Remove progrms.if u find any extra programs that u r not using then delete them, and also check the stratup using start-Run-Msconfig
if there are too many startup programs then surely it will slow down the computer.
Also go to the Internet options and delete cookies and history contects using Tools from Internet Explorer.
Right click on the C-drive and go to properties and Disk Clean up.
these procedures will surely help to bring ur computer to the normal condition.

click start, run, type in "msconfig" click on the startup tab and check whats booting up when you first start your pc, be careful as you can turn off stuff you need, so take off the obvious ones, anything such as yahoo, google, or any programs you run related.

clear out your internet explorer temporary file directory often by clicking on the internet explorer icon with the right hand mouse button and selecting properties.

Delete unused applications and programs

if u have do\wnloaded too many things frm IE, it will slow down ur computer, so delete the unwanted file thro' flwg process:
rclick (IE) - >delete cookies - > ok - > delete files - > ok
close & reopen IE
if u still find no improvement , then i think u have installed 2 OS which is also the another possible cause to slow down ur computer.
