Its not the motor or belt or door switch, otherwise it wouldnt
spin. Is it taking water when put to wash ? If so, does it overflow
the water (wont shut off by itself) ? If so, the rubber tube on the water level switch is off at the switch or where it plugs into the
drum or damaged. If damaged - replace the tube - if neither of these problems exist - replace the water level switch. If the water shuts off at a
certain level, but wont wash - the timer is probably defective.
But it could also be a defective water level switch. The only way
to tell is to get at the water level switch and remove the rubber
tube and plug another piece of tube into it and blow into it with
the timer selected to wash. If it agitates then the switch is probably sticking and has to be replaced. If you are not handy
enough to follow these instructions then your only recourse is
to call for service.

If it is a direct drive transmission, it is probably shot. It is cheaper to replace the washer, unless you have a warranty. If it is spinning out, you know the motor is working. You will probably have to call a service tech or just replace it.
