The book Cheaper by the Dozen deals witht he family life of the Gilbreth family; Frank and Lillian (Moller) Gilbreth were pioneers in the field of efficiency that made workers--particularly in factories--more productive.

They had twelve children, one of whom died early. Six boys and five girls lived to adulthood.

The lesson was one of the family as a cohesive unit--the older children helped the younger ones, particularly with schoolwork (the children routinely skipped grades in school because of this tutoring) and all had their chores to do. Moreover, their parents made practically everything a learning experience and did such things as have the children play records (French and German) while bathing in order to learn how to speak these languages.

There were also stories of the family's travels, including one to California (Lililian Gilbreth was originally from California) to visit their grandparents (this was during the World War I), and just general anecdotes concerning life in what was, for the early 20th century, a most unconventional family. Think of it--eleven children, a mother who worked and traveled speaking to various engineering groups, and a father whose work was in a new field and often practiced his theories at home.

The climax of the story is Frank Gilbreth's death in 1922; it ends with Lillian Gilbreth packing to fill in for him at a meeting he was supposed to attend.

The book is quite good, and I'd also recommend the sequel, Belles on Their Toes, which continues the story of the family after the father's death.

I love that book. I read it when I was a child and I still like it. I agree with the person who said it's about family life and the values in America in the early part of the 20thy century. But I must add that I learned other things from that book. The mother, Lillian Gilbreth, was a professional woman in those days, one of the first women engineers. She was a pioneer in the field of industrial management and there's a US postal stamp in her honor. Her husband and children respected her and admired her. I suppose that, as a woman, I was very taken by her example. When I grew older, I took the time to research her life.

Hey, news flash. try the library. and get ready for this. TRY READING FOR A CHANGE. the book is immensely better than the movie and is a true story. learn something today, it will help you tomorrow.

sorry, but i am a lawyer and i am sick to death of students like you who do this. this is what we in the law call cheating.

good luck.
