Boys have asked for metal baseball bats for Christmas. I live in Dallas - they live in Chicago - so I can't just take them to the store and let them choose. And I don't want to send a gift certificate.
Any coaches out there with advice on how to select?

I agree with one of the answers above - the bat should be about 26 - 28 inches long. Typically, the length is the only thing that differs at that length, and the weight of the bat is rather secondary.

What I would do is find out their current height, then go to a sporting goods store and ask a clerk what length bat should a 10 year old at this height. Any reputible sporting goods store will be able to answer the question for you, and give you the options.

Good luck!

A bat for a 10 year old should be no longer than 28 inches. Depending on how tall or short they are of course... Little League bats generally run betweet 26-28 inches. There is also weight to consider, but at their age its probably not a big deal. I would pick the lightest one if there is a choice... I hope this helps...

I would get a 28 inch bat. The important thing is the weight. If you get anything too heavy you risk the bat swinging your kids. That can also create bad habits in their swing. if they are an average size 10 yr old, I would say no more than 21 oz.

I'm not a coach, only a ninth grade player, but here's a method that coaches, their players, and even MLB players like Cal Ripken have used. Obviously, have them find a bat that they like. For 10-year-olds, it should probably be around 28-32 inches. Have them hold the bat out straight, so it's parallel to the ground, at arm's length. If they can hold it like that comfortably for 10 seconds, it's a good size.
I'm guessing that they're around fifth grade. When I was in fifth, I used an Easton Triple 7. It was 31 in, 18.5 oz.

The batter should not have been called out. Rule 6.07 states: a batter shall be called out on appeal when he fails to bat in his proper turn and another batter COMPLETES a time at bat in his place. The proper battermay take his place in the batter's box at any time before the improper batter becomes a runner or is put out, and any ball and strikes shall be counted in the proper batter's time at bat. While this is the Official Major League Baseball rule, most Little Leagues follow them, with just some modifications for safety. Your coach should have protested the game.
