When I want to prevent or get rid of a cold, I take either Nyquil (the nighttime one is really strong and gets you really drowsy, so you should be careful if taking that) or Robitussin. Both are really good. But they taste nasty.

airborne works well. I had a bad reaction to Zicam, I got really, really sick, but if it's for a cough, Delsym is the best. and believe me or not. Benedryl works great on coughs also, the ingredient in it, used to be used in cold medicines.

it all depends upon your symptoms. drinking some warm tea will help you along with some ibuprofen. NyQuil will help you to sleep well. look for something non-drowsy for daytime.
i would suggest telling the pharmacist your symptoms & see what they reccomend. that is your best bet. they know what works best for the common colds that are out there right now. its part of their job/education.
