Since the previous pope was shot by a Turk, the concern for a repeat performance was understandable...especially after this pope's much publicized remarks that Muslims in general took offense at.

A few months ago he made a remark that was considered disparaging to Muslims. He quoted an early cleric who said that Islam was "spread by the sword." There were protests of the Pope by Muslims at the time and then when he was coming to Turkey, Turkish Muslims protested his visit. Turkey is actually a majority Christian country, so not everyone didn't want the Pope to visit.

One of the reasons is that the visit was really to the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople. The Turks are trying very hard to eradicate christianity from a city that was the epicenter of eastern christianity. The popes visit reaffirms that the Patriarch in Constantinople is the respected spiritual leader, first among equals, of the the 300 mil Orthodox Christians around the world.
