Bartholin's cysts or Skene's duct glands. They are basically glands that got closed over and formed cysts. the bartholin's cysts are closer to the rectum and the skene's duct glands are closer to the urethra (where urine comes out).

Although you're understandably worried, it's very unlikely that you've anything to worry about. There are many reasons why lumps and bumps can form in the area of the vulva (the outer, visible skin folds of the female genital tract) and the vagina (the internal muscular passage), and most of these are relatively harmless.

A part of normal anatomy

This area of the body is notoriously lumpy and bumpy as part of its natural anatomy. Many young women find that when they begin to explore their body, and the way it changes with puberty, they're surprised (and worried) by the feel of the bits and pieces, which don't seem smooth or right. But in many cases, all they're feeling are some of the natural ridges and curves. Your GP or family-planning nurse will be able to help explain everything you can feel. You might feel more comfortable talking about this to another woman, so if your doctor is a man, ask if you can see a woman doctor.

Lumps in the vulva

There's a long list of things which can cause lumps in the vulva, including some of the following:

Most common are all sorts of benign cysts, such as sebaceous cysts (accumulations of secretions, which can occur anywhere on the skin or mucosal surfaces), lipomas (fatty deposits) and fibromas (fibrous tissue deposits). These may need no treatment at all.
Infected glands are uncommon, but may need a tiny operation to empty the contents and heal.
Viral warts are very common, and range from small raised pimples, to a mass of large, cauliflower-like growths. The virus, which causes them, is passed on during sex. The warts must be removed by burning, cutting or freezing, often under anaesthetic.
Cancer of the vulva is very uncommon, and almost always occurs in elderly women.

Lumps in the vagina

There's a very similar list of causes of lumps in the vagina, from cysts, to warts, to tumours. Once again, vaginal cancer is very rare, and usually only occurs in much older women, (the only exception being an unusual type of vaginal cancer seen in young women, whose mother was treated in early pregnancy with a drug called stilboestrol, a drug used 20 to 30 years ago to prevent miscarriage).

See the experts

Clearly, you need to get someone to take a look at the lumps which are worrying you. Don't feel embarrassed about seeing your doctor - they see this sort of problem every day, and won't mind at all if the cause of your lumps turns out to be something quite harmless (as I suspect it will). If you would rather not see your own doctor, go to your local genito-urinary clinic (the number is in the telephone directory). Although they more often deal with sexually transmitted infections, they're experts in all things genital.

Sounds like genital warts or cysts. Whatever, make sure you go to a sexual health clinic quickly because that will put your mind at rest. Also, if they are genital warts then you may infect your partner and they will start to spread quickly and then get uncomfortable.

If they are smooth and not on the surface, they could be multiple Bartholins cysts. Don't worry they are not dangerous. see doctor.
