Do guitar players have particular preferences when it comes to plucks, guitar straps and gig bags?

I'm not a music player myself, my boyfriend is, I'm looking at music-themed gifts for him and wondering if it would be a good idea to get him some nice custom stone picks and a good guitar strap or if they are purely personal musician preference that an outside could never get right.

Does anyone who plays have any other ideas for good gifts for musicians/guitar players?
[If it means anything he plays acoustic - soul/country/blues]

Typically a lot of this type of stuff is personal preference. Do you know what type of acoustic he has? If he doesn't have a hard case for it, that might be a nice gift that you can't go wrong with. Another suggestion I have is a guitar cleanup kit with fretboard conditioners, polishing cloths etc. Last time I checked, Martin put together a decent one for acoustics that was pretty reasonable. As far as picks/strings go, that is completely unique to the person typically and unless you can find out which gauge of each he likes, I wouldn't buy them.

If you know any of his favorite artists, you could pick up a sheet music/tab book of their songs as well. They sell these at most guitar shops (especially sam ash and guitar center) and they can make cool gifts. Finally, if you are unsure what to buy and really want to let him make up his own mind, guitar center and most other major retail music chains sell gift cards.

I hope this helps. I'm a guitarist myself so I know how hard it is to shop for us during the christmas season.

As a guitar player, I encourage my girlfriend to avoid buying me any gifts that have anything to do with music. This is because she will not know exactly what I need, and if I return it, it may hurt her feelings. Most musicians have to actually see and feel anything they are going to buy to ensure that they are happy with it. Your best bet is to find out which music store is his favorite and get him a gift card. There are too many picks, straps, and gig bags out there to try and pick which one he is going to like. It would be like playing the lottery. Best of luck.

picks are personal - I wouldn't try it. Dunno about stone picks - never heard of them.

Strap - a good leather one, with clips to stop it dropping off. Especially if he currently has a naff rainbow thing with string.

It's tricky to buy a gig bag without the guitar in your hand. Maybe measure it (depth, two widths, neck and body lengths) and tell the music shop person the size - they will find a guitar the same size and make it match. Gig bags should be so well padded you could transport the pope in them, and should have hand and shoulder straps.

Wireless pickup is good if you want to push the boat out. Audio Technica is good; safest bet is to get a UHF pickup instead of VHF. Ebay is cheapest source but music shops shouldn't be far behind.

A tuner that clips on the end of the neck is good.

As long as it all fits, its all good, it doesn't really matter what straps, guitar picks, gig bags you get him, you can actually get universal gig bags that fit both acoustic and electrical guitrars, I myself have played guitar before, so I know this, I have now moved on to drums because the band I'm in requires a drummer whol can not only keep the pace, but also be creative when needed!

they are VERY particular. Just look at what brand and size picks he uses (ie: Fender, Dunlop, Heavy, Medium, Thin, etc.). A lot of strap companies make some cool custom logo straps. Something personalized to him would be very cool, imo.

Good Luck

I would let him pick out his own strap. Go to a music store and you will be surprised at all the gift ideas you will find that he will like.

Maybe a good tuner if he doesn't have one. Things like picks, strings, etc are by preference and unless you know what he uses it wouldn't be a good idea to get those things. Of course, if he was like me, he would appreciate what you got him, even if its not what he uses, because you got it for him.

firstly im a harmonica player..so i mix with guitarists, indeed daughter is one... she kinda likes her plectrums. she picked one strap..and it stays on her fender... but i'll bet shes got 40 picks... oh and guitar leads for soem reason she always drags another lurid colour from her bag... and she does lead art... seven rolls of insulating tape...all different colours..and she bands them... she uses reflective prismatic tape... its shimmers across teh floor... when i ask her why, as dads do, she smiles..well no one makes them do they? and all i can say to that is..well, give me a G...

its only rock n roll.

find a mucisian store with gift cards, this will allow you to spend the amount you want and he will appreciate that you care about his hobby.
