I would write a story about the struggles you went through trying to decide what to get him for Christmas. You could go through different thoughts and ideas, gifts he may have needed etc. Nearing the end of the story i would ask "what do I get a man like my Dad for Christmas?" then describe what you love about him and what he means to you! Finishing it off, maybe you could say that in the end there was nothing fitting to give him, except the words and thoughts of a daughter that loves him! It wouldnt have to be all serious, you could make it a bit of fun too. Im sure he'd love it!!

Oh, boy my favorite part of answers, free form imagination...
I recently had cause to go back and re-read some old fairy tales written by Hans Christian Anderson. And one of his techniques was to use verbal imagery to paint a mental picture of beautiful flowers and green trees and bubbling brooks. I think this was used because the children were cooped-up in the winter and a story before bed was a device to give them good thoughts and visualize idyllic things.
Another thing, what things interest your Dad? I would base the story on something he likes but write it from your perspective. It doesn't have to be about the thing he likes but use terms and names he is familiar with. . .

Well, it depends. Does your father like humor? Do you want to write him something heart warming and cozy seeming or something funny or something pretty and sad...? If you want to write him something funny, you should make a retelling of some funny things that have happened in your family, like my family has a lot of these like when my brother saw a baby picture of himself and tried to throw it away or when I had just cleaned the living room and told them I'd know who's made a mess and my sister said it wasn't her even though she was sitting there amongst a pile of clippings making another one...if you make a compilation or something like that, I'm sure he'll like it. And then you can illustrate it if you want to.

How about stories about what you remember growing up with him? Things you did together, things he said, lessons he taught you, songs he sang, etc.? Add some photos or drawings.
