because it's his band... and i think the orginal drummer is still playing with him (or atleast the one that was playing while slash was still in it) any way do you relize that rose is in the name of the band and the last name of axl. so maybe that's why he kept it.... with ozzy on the other hand... he left black sabbath not the other way around

Legality. As mentioned, Axl Rose got the rights for legal use of the name... isn't there some stories that he tricked his bandmates out of it?
In any case, it does't really matter. I've seen quite a few "bands" become more of a solo project + backing helpers for the lead singer. It honestly doesn't bother me, because it's over and done with, and that's the way it is.
Arguably, you could never win in this kind of situation. I bet many would say that a band shouldn't call itself by the same name if they kick out the lead singer--it could become an almost totally different band.
In a perfect world, when a band split up, everyone would agree to use different names for their next projects... but the world isn't perfect. And someone wants all the money that having that band name will entail!

Because he held the other band members to ransom with his constant tantrums and no-shows during the Use Your Illusion tour (1991-93). He told them that either they signed away the rights to the band name or he would quit the tour, which would have resulted in lawsuits costing them millions.
Nowadays, he is a parody of his former self. I couldn't agree more with the comment about the 'new' GN'R being little more than a tribute band. I saw them at Wembley Arena in July of this year, on the second night, when Axl disappeared during 'Nightrain', leaving ex-Skid Row vocalist Sebastian Bach to finish the song. The set was then concluded early with Bach again taking lead vocals for 'Paradise City'. If it hadn't been for the presence of Izzy Stradlin, on as guest guitarist for the encores, it would literally have been a tribute band onstage, i.e. none of the original Gunners.

Because he's a knob. saw him at download in Dublin this summer, Funeral for a Friend were on before them, and they blew him outta the water. I know, i know, before that day i would have called that sacrilege too. Fact is Axl is so far up his own *** he can't see how crap he has become. Thats not to take away from the brilliance of gnr in their day, mind.

Axl uses the name because he owns the rights to it, plain and simple. The current incarnation of Gn'R is nothing more than a glorified cover band that happens to have the same lead singer IMO.
