You can take basic courses on that. But for a do-it-yourself method. Look for simple/basic patterns at a fabric store that are the same as the garment you want to make (ex. making a jacket? get a basic jacket pattern) You can usually match some of the pre-made patterns to parts of the garment you will be making. Next, read the instructions for the pattern so you can get a basic idea of how the garment is sewn together - you may even want to practice putting the basic pattern together to see how you might change it. Then, you can use the basic cut-outs to make your own cut-outs (just use a soft tissue-type paper so you can pin this to your fabric). If your designs have any commen changes, you can probably find different patterns that incorporate different parts and just take from each pattern what works best. The rest is just trial and error. Just remember you can always tear out a seem but you can't add cut fabric - so don't be to hasty with the scissors and give your self enough of a hemto work with on parts that seem tricky and likely to require a 2nd attempt (or you might have to spend more on replacing the used fabric). You should bring your designs with you when shopping for fabric and ask people at the store to help you with basic things you might need. Jo-Ann's is great for overall shopping. Good Luck! Have fun!

I have heard you can take a garment similar to the pattern that you like, the design you like, lay it flat, and then trace around it.

I think ya gotta leave it a little wider though, for the seam line. Then cut the notches about where you know they should go. Voila!

Never actually tried it, but it might work. Good Luck.
You can use a ruler to help create the seamline evenly. And tracing paper and wheel so that there is no indelible mark, to show.
I think you're clothes are going to be really beautiful.
Also, maybe a proffessional seamstress could help. Many of them do not charge much. And maybe become a business partner, but copyright the designs.
How about the Tech school?
