the car is fuel injected but it putts up to a start. the rpm's slowly build up until if finally starts and then it will die if i don't hold my foot on the gas for a few minutes after. also, when i pull up to a stop sign and put it in neutral (its a stick) the rpm's drop down really low and then jumps back up. any ideas? thanks.

Since it is a Saturn I would suggest getting a fuel injection cleaning service done first. Not just a $2.00 bottle of of the shelf injector cleaner, I mean the full service, including cleaning out the manifold, injector rail and throttle body. On some years of Saturn there is a TSB about problems with carbon buildup which can cause drivability issues such as those you describe. Most repair shops, dealers and even some quicky lube places offer this FI cleaning service for arond $100 but i don't recommend the quicky lube places because if it is anything more severe, they can't help you.

One way to check if you have bad carbon fouling is to unscrew the band clamp that holds the rubber air intake hose onto the Throttle Body. Stick your finger in there and swipe the edges. If your finger comes out covered in a thick layer of black sludge, you have a problem.

Saw one last year where the carbon was so thick almost no air was getting through the TB. A throttle body opening is usually something like 2-2.5-inches in diameter but this one was nearly completely choked off. We had to scrub out the TB by hand then do 2 fuel injection cleaning kits to burn it all out.

Have your automatic choke checked and clean your injectors.

have you car checked for a tune-up, and have them clean the throttle plates and the tune-up if needed.
