My daughter has a high metabolism. She's about 4 ft 1 and 56 pounds. Everything else is fine with her health. I was wondering what I should to to help her gain weight in a healthy way? I don't know where to begin. I don't want to feed her fast food either as that would not be healthy. Thanks in advance for your help.

I forgot to say the doctor said she's a little under weight. This is why I'm concerned. I'm not trying to make her overweight.

My sister's daughter had the same problem a few years ago. She found that the easiest (and healthiest) way to get to gain weight was to offer her an instant meal along with her dinner or lunch. These are found in the local pharmacy, (Boost was the brand I think she chose) These are complete meals in themselves and healthy too. She wouldn't push them on her daughter religiously or anything just a couple of times a week. She would offer a 'milk shake' to her daughter with her meal.

I've tried them and I prefer the chocolate ones personally. Being under weight can be very serious, one bad bout of the flu and her weight can drop to a level below being healthy very quickly and hurt her recovery time or lead to other complications.

You're right to stay away from fast foods, that may bring up her weight but not in a healthy way. You're a good mom!!

Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Give her a breakfast like oatmeal -real oatmeal, not sugary instant Quaker crap- that will stick to her ribs and have her drink Ensure shakes or something similar.

Although if she's got a healthy diet anyway and is only a few pounds underweight, she's probably fine. My BMI is about 16, but since I'm eating a healthy diet and in general good shape, my doctors aren't worried.

If you got her checked out at the doctor's, though, wouldn't (s)he have recommended something?

For a 9 year old you really need to consult with her pediatrician and possibly a registered dietician before doing anything to try to alter the way her body is growing. If she eats regularly and eats good food, it may be that she is just supposed to be small right now. I was a very skinny kid, probably right around where your daughter is or even smaller but ended up FAT by my early 20s from lack of exercise and poor eating habits.

If she is healthy don't force her to eat when she is not hungry or you can end up going the other way and have an obese child on your hands. She might just end up being one of the lucky ones that can eat whatever she wants and not gain weight. My parents bought into all of the old ways of parenting, with feeding us 4 kids cereal at 3 weeks old, and making us finish all the food on our plates even if we were full, and 3/4 of us ended up being diabetic and over-weight.

These are what increases metabolism........
1. Eating 5-6 smalls meals everyday and eating them SLOW.
2.Alot of exercises right BEFORE you eat.
3.Building MUSCLE also increases you metabolism!
4.Eating ANTIOXIDENTS like, prunes, coffee, and green tea (gives you the idea)
Ways to decrease metabolism.........
1.Eating 3 large meals each day very FAST.
2.Drinking ENSURE or PEDIASURE has alot of good healthy stuff and has ALOT of calories, so she doesnt have to eat greasy or unhealthy food.
3.when you eat few but BIG portions your body will not be as full so it GATHERS FAT to get ready to go into self defense.

She will eventually grow into herself. I was always underweight, but the good news is now I am very healthy looking and don't have a problem staying that way. For now, give her foods that are healthy but high in carbs, calories, and natural fats. Nuts are great.

have her eat several small meals a day instead of three big ones, and load her up on carbs. you can make it healthy. give her pasta with steamed veg and butter, feed her meat with rice and/or potatoes, let her snack on rolls, breadsticks, anything high in carbs. just balance that out with fresh fruit and vegetables and let her have treats like cake instead of candy. still sugary but more carbs. and please, with all those carbs, make her do SOME exercise...like go for a walk after the meal. too much exercise and she won't gain, but not enough and she will just get fat and out of shape. good luck.
