i was given a compact persario computer from a lady on free cycle.its in like new condition.but when i boot it up it has her daughters name and asks for a password.i called her back and her daughter dont remember her password, she said she would look for the start up disk but i never heard from her again.guess she couldnt find it.so is there a way i could still use the computer without knowing the password?she gave me a new printer,cd burner and all kinds of x-tras with it,and i gave it to my daughter for x-mas and she loved it ,but now she cant use it.and with x-mas so close theres no money left to spend a couple hundred dollars for a new operating system.its got windows xp on it.is there a way to hack around it?it would be worth spending the money on but dont have the x-tra cash right now.anyone who could tell me how to do it would get a best answer and the gratitude of myself, and my daughter.thanks.

I am going to assume that you have XP home, and not XP Pro.

When you turn it on, start tapping the F8 key until a menu comes up asking for the kind of boot you want. Select "Safe Mode" and log on with administrator userid. Once in, go to control panel > users and groups > and setup a new account for you. I would simply delete the other accounts. You dont know what kind of stuff they were doing.

Now - you WILL need to get an original CD in the event that microsoft askes for it during a valadation or update. You can buy them at a lot of places for about $10. You dont need the license - just the media.

Now, if you have XP Pro, search the net for UBCD. Basically, you burn a CD from an image you download. You then boot the computer using this CD. You then use one of the tools to 'blank' out the existing passwords. Restart and logon with no password.

If you can’t get expert help, then find some. A couple of things you can do is press F2 for setup or boot options when you turn it on. Possibly run safe mode or find another option that gives you entry without the need of the passwords. If you can get in, then get into accounts and do a little rearranging. However, if you are unable to get in or if an expert can’t, then you may have to buy a new disk or ask for someone who has it. The latter is somewhat illegal. I have a friend who can help. He works computers for a living. Give me your email address and I will either have him contact you or send you the information needed directly. It may take a few weeks. He’s off right now, but I could bribe him a bit.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
