The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, was a major battle in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, fought on April 6 and April 7, 1862, in southwestern Tennessee. Confederate forces under Generals Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard launched a surprise attack against the Union army of Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and came close to defeating his army.

Oral histories tend to be pretty accurate. You are only 4 or 5 generations away from the people who lived it- that's pretty darn close in the historical scheme. In my youth I talked with a woman whose uncles died in a prisoner camp at Appomattox. The battle your ancestor was captured at will determine the prison camp he was taken to. The camp history is where you'll find the record you want. The vast majority of southern and northern POWs died from unsanitary conditions, if he did not return from the war, expect that dysentery killed him and there will be a record of the death. So take an educated guess at the battle. Research the prison camps from that battle, contact historical societies from the cities around the camp. If you strike out start over with another battle. Good luck.
