At aged 14 (1953) my first job was working as a cleanup boy in a radio repair store. That was before the personal computers, mind you, but simply radios for the technicians to work on.

My job was to sweep the wooden floors, wash the windows, and clean the brass spittoons daily. Spittoons were in common use then and they were the nastiest items to clean other than toilets.

Perhaps that job was the impetus for my never having the desire to chew tobacco.

My pay? I think it was around $5.00 a week.

I was a birth control specialist for corn.
We used to have to detassle the corn rows, well every other row, so that the corn would not pollinate and make big corn. The feed corn is what grew.
What we did was walk a corn row and pull off all of the tassles from that row. I walked many miles in Illinois cornfields when I was in junior highschool.
