Same thing as a "water-dog". Both of these terms are used interchangeably by fishermen who use them for fish bait. They are large salamanders (about 4 to 8 inches long) and my father used to use them to catch large-mouth bass on Lake Mead in Nevada. My brother and I used to play with the waterdogs until he left on his fishing trip. Thanks for the memory. I haven't thought of that bucketful of those big brown creatures since I don't know when!

In the south it is a type of salamander that is sometimes used as fishing bait. They get about 6-8 inches long. Ugly suckers.
