Yes, you'll need a coat in Alabama during the winter. The state gets light snow occasionally but it's more likely to have an ice storm.

Well, all things are relative. This weekend in Birmingham, it's going up to 72. Spring starts about the 2-3rd week in March.
On the other hand, we have not had any measurable snowfall in almost six years.
It's not balmy, but compared to the north, it's a lot more tolerable.
