First, you have to know what all the symbols mean and how they are affected by position and what affect them witht the otehr cards.
You also have to know how to deal them out to give a "proper" reading

It all depends on your spread, a 3 card spread is easy, with 1 card for past, present, and future, (some people use a 4th "alternate/switch card", however a Celtic spread is much more complex.
Cards also have "reverse meanings" depending on which way they're dealt.
