Did most Southerners own slaves, or was this segment of the population small or large? And, thus what would the percentage be of Southerners who had a stake in keeping slavery alive, so to speak, in the South?

according to wikipidia about 1/3 of southern whites owned slaves.

As my family was researched we were indentured servants during that time.
Also the industrialized north suppressed the southern "owners" who were attempting to get their slaves or servants th right to vote.The south would have doubled their Representatives and have more votes than the north.

Most Southerners did not own slaves. The people who owned slaves were farmers. Most people were not farmers.
