From familiarity with history, there seems to be a few things-once a society has enjoyed great wealth and large borders, there has seemed to be a laxness in awareness of how vulnerable that society can be. Good things are taken for granted and the mindset seems to be only greatest on domestic issues. The rest of the globe becomes reduced to a much lesser concern. A false security has been instilled in the society. There is welcomed "Isolationism" , in my opinion a dangerous stance.
Borders have always seemed to be an issue. They can be costly to protect, not only in the monetary since but in the cost of lives also.
Great economic instability can also be a major issue. A society that is hungry is a society that listens with the gut and not the intellect. This opens the door to welcome the "vampires" ready to feed on the insecurities of that society and further decline the survival of domestic peoples.
I find that there is corruption wherever power can be available-everywhere. To stay the corruption, it seems a "civilized" society has to have in place laws that can be enforced and a moral and ethic sense of responsibility,ie, continued education of the people and the people's response to thier civic duties such as simple a thing as voting.

The main cause of every collapse is internal strife. Several good leaders bring the civilization to the height of its power and then a weak leader comes along and messes things up and the society begins to crash. Also the decline of morals standard of living in the common peoples will lead a society to collapse. Truthfully though, one reason doesn't cause something to collapse but a long list of problems and events over long periods of time will cause a civilization to collapse.

It seems collapse rarely happens by itself, normally one culture is superseded by a concurring power which imposes its own culture on the loser. (Examples Rome on Greece, Normandy on Britain, Spain on the Incas, Europeans (US) on the Plains Indians).
Of course there are glaring exceptions; Rome and the USSR both crumbled internally as a result of political corruption and decadence, to the extent that their economy could not support the population (stagnation) and viable government maintained. Rome was invaded and
the USSR fragmented).
Catastrophes also caused many early civilizations to become extinct.
Just a foot note: Countries that have corruption as and inherent part of their culture tend not to thrive and the general population lives in poverty and there are plenty of examples.

Very easy to answer.
Pride & arrogance. Add in the desire for control & power, plus some corruption, and even the biggest civilization comes crashing down.
