they most often will give you something to calm you down, before they put the iv in, before you go for the surgery and get the anesthetic,,,,,,, if they dont offer this, ask for it, make sure and let them know your anxiety level,,,,, also, your doctor will of accessed you, before putting you to "sleep", so if he felt you had any condition that would cause a problem, he wouldnt do it. as to the iv, it wont hurt that much, and only for a few seconds,,,,, you wont really know how you will react to being put under, until you have it done, some wake up slow, some wake up fast. i havent had lazer done for this particular thing, but i did for a cyst on my leg,,,,, and was awake, trust me when i say you would rather be asleep, not due to pain,, but just seeing/hearing/smelling it all,,,,,, i have had several procedures, including gyn, done asleep, and all was fine,,,,,you shouldnt really have any problems afterwards, some get a mild upset stomach, from the anesthesia,,, but i never did,,,,,

I cant answer you on the details about the preparation but I am a cancer fighter and I am petrified of needles and IV. So five years later I am still fighting. So I cant bypass all the scary stuff so I use Emla cream. It numbs the skin so you won't feel anything when you get blood work and different things. You need to buy a small tube from the pharmacy along with tegaderm pads ( these are plastic square bandaids that cover the cream and keep it from drying out). Leave the cream on for one hour and then wipe it off. Numbing effect is good for about three hours. If you are put under for the procedure, ask the doctor when you can apply the emla cream

I haven't had it, but this info may answer some of your questions:

It concerns me that your doctor wants to do this and hasn't even answered these very basic questions for you about what the procedure involves. Hopefully you're going back for another appointment to discuss it more fully before anything more happens.

I have, however, had many IVs. An IV is nothing. If the person is good you may not even realize that they've already put it in, or you'll feel like a pinch. If they have some trouble getting it positioned properly it may be worse than that, but even still really no big deal. The worrying about it if you're scared is way, way worse than the actual event.

You are soooo going to be fine!!!! I've had this exact thing done 4 times, it's not a huge deal. You'll have some cramping during the procedure which is uncomfortable but not that bad. Ask your OB about taking tylenol about 1/2 to 1 hour before going in. I never had an IV for this procedure and can't think why you would need one? In any case I've had them for other things and it is easier then a shot. After you'll have some minor bleeding for a couple of days (no tampons) but that's it! You will be okay-relax!!!

Don't be scared they put a IV in & it a slight pinch, they put something in a needle into "the IV" not right into your hand & poof your asleep, it's nothing. I done it 3 times! you wake up and the first 30 seconds feels weird (all the medication coming out of you) & then your drowsey. You have some juice & a cookie they give you & if the IV is too tight ask them to lossen the tape. You do wake up I promise. Pretend like you're going to bed for the night (a fee nap)!!

talk to your doctor, if you are having anesthesia talk to to him/her too, tell them you are scared, ask if they can give you something to calm your nerves. They might be able to give you Versed before they give you an IV or before they take you back for the procedure. It will make you feel very relaxed and you may not even remember much after getting it. Its good stuff! lol

As for how much the IV is going to hurt.. it will feel like having blood drawn, a quick pinch. they don't leave the metal part of the needle in you, there is a small plastic "straw" (catheter) that stays in your vein and the is flexible, they will tape it down so it doesn't move but it is much more comfortable.

I have had the same thing done when I was 19. It is called a leep procedure. I asked them to put to sleep instead of numbing the area. I didnt want to know what was going on. It really wasnt that bad. I had alot of cramping when the surgery was done and alot of brown discharge from some topical they use. They gave me some meds for the pain. But now I am looking normal when they do my papsmears. Good Luck I know you will do fine

I have never had an abnormal pap.
Did they say that you had abnormal cells?
I do know alot of people that had to have laser surgery to remove the cells.
My friend had to have a cell frozen because the cell could of caused cancer. She was awake and she said it was like a normal pap smear.
My cousin had to have her cells lasered. She said it did not hurt but was uncomfortable.
take it you never had a child. I had plenty of IV's. Its like a hard pinch or a prick. You will be fine just trust in your doctor! Let me know how things went!

I don't know if they'll need to put you out but if the doctor chooses too you're usually only out for a short time and it's not a very deep sedation so you should be fine. Ask your doctor any questions B4 the procedure, even if they sound silly, you can bet they've heard it B4. Good luck!

I had surgery once and the general anesthesia was simple. You count backwards from 100 and before you reach 80 it's lights out, just like going to sleep. No pain, no discomfort. Don't worry about it. Just follow your doctor's instructions.
