I agree with Sandee. That "happening" description simply means a special or significant party or event. It started with the American Hippy movement nearly a half century ago.
So it is another misused word altered by pop culture.
So go, have fun and be a "Happening" person!

A Christmas happening is a snob's way of saying party/get together/ Christmas lunch. I just don't understand why the working class put on airs and graces and make themselves sound ridiculous. This 'happening' word has been adopted from the Americans. I am SO not tired yet. Get it? What really gets me are the people who say 'speak to you later' and 'see you soon' when they have absolutely no intention of doing either of those things. I have to go now or I may have a 'happening' in my oven because I'm cooking. Hope you have a lovely time at your daughters.

As far as I know, Nobody has thrown a 'happening' since about 1968. Its probably just dinner.

sounds like she's not following any predefined formal structure there. I suspect mulled wine and santa hats will be involved. Enjoy.
