do you think your employer would use corporal punishment on problem employees if they were legally allowed?

Probably. Humans will do very peculiar things when given permission. A lot of studies (Browning, Zimbardo, Milligram, Bandura) etc have found that the second you give someone official permission to hurt others, they are likely to do so, particularly if it's backed up by some kind of justification ('because these are problem employees', etc) or it becomes normal socially.

By corporal punishment I take it you mean push-ups and things like that. Is that right?

I would say "no," most employers would probably be uncomfortable ordering an employee to "drop and give me 20" or run laps around the building. I know I couldn't order anyone on my team to do something like that, for any reason.

Also, there's the health consideration. Even if it was legal, imagine the backlash if some overweight employee or somebody with a heart condition dropped dead. I doubt any company would want that kind of negative publicity.

I'm sure there are employers who would use corporal punishment, if allowed. It would be so much easier to hit a lazy cashier or waitress, than to have to interview, hire and train a new person, every time an employer is unhappy with an employee's performance. And wouldn't that just keep us on our toes!! Knowing the boss can cuff you, makes personal phone calls on company time too big a risk to take.

I think some would. I also think if I were the recipient...that employer would be looking for their teeth before it was said and done. ;0)

Back in the 1800's, I'm SURE some employers beat their employees for indiscretions.

I think we should have that right reinstated. Unionism is a dead issue. If you work for someone and make your bread and butter doing that it would be better than losing your livelihood wouldn't it? We allow teachers to do it to our children....... so why not employers?

The company that I work for just says "YOUR FIRED" and walks you to the door.

I work for a Japanese owned company and when they first bought us they did smack one lady on the back of the head and they were told that they couldn't do that here in the US.

No more than an employee would stand for it.

There is no indication whatsoever that they would, except in the imaginations of liberals and the lazy constituents of the Democrat party.

Hahaha no, I work for a very ethical company.
And my boyfriend works for my mom, so he would probably say no as well.
